Find the water, or it comes back
Mould in a car is a symptom. Something is letting water in, or trapping it, and unless that is found the smell returns within weeks of any clean. So we look for the source before we treat anything.

Damp is a health issue, not just a smell
A car cabin is a small, sealed, warm space. Mould growing in carpet underlay or in the air conditioning is circulated straight into the air you breathe every time the fan comes on.
- Spores blown from the vents can aggravate asthma and allergies, and are a common cause of headaches on longer drives.
- The cabin filter stops being a filter once it is saturated, and starts distributing what is growing in it.
- Damp underlay stays wet long after the carpet above it feels dry, which is why surface drying rarely solves anything.
- It is worse for children, who sit lower in the car and closer to rear footwell vents.

Why air fresheners make it worse
Almost everyone tries the cheap options first, and they are worth understanding before you spend more on them.
- Air fresheners and hanging trees add a scent on top. The mould is still growing, and the combination is usually more unpleasant than the original smell.
- Odour bombs and foggers sanitise the air and the surfaces they reach. They do not reach into wet underlay, which is where the growth actually is.
- Carpet shampoo without extraction adds more water to a car that already has too much, and frequently makes the problem worse.
- Leaving windows open helps a damp car and does nothing for a leaking one.
Removal means taking the moisture out, killing the growth in the material rather than on it, and stopping the water getting back in.
The Process
How we clear mould and damp properly

A damp meter and a careful check of drains, seals and footwells. There is no point cleaning a car that is still letting water in.

Including under the carpet where necessary. Underlay holds water long after the surface feels dry.
- 3Remove the growth
Hot steam kills mould in the fibres rather than wiping it off the surface, and it does so without soaking the car further.

Wet extraction pulls the contamination and the moisture back out instead of pushing both deeper.
- 5Treat the ventilation system
A new cabin filter and an antibacterial treatment through the evaporator, because a clean carpet and a mouldy air conditioning system still smells.

How long does it take?
Most mould and odour treatments take 2–4 hours depending on how widespread it is; heavily affected cars or ozone treatments may need a little longer.
Why does my car smell musty even after I clean it?
Because the water is still getting in, or has never fully come out. Carpet underlay holds moisture long after the surface feels dry, and mould growing underneath keeps producing the smell. Cleaning the surface treats the symptom. Until the drain, seal or wet item causing it is dealt with, the smell returns within weeks.
What causes damp in a car?
Most often blocked sunroof drains, which are four small tubes running down the pillars and clog with leaf debris. After that, perished door and window seals, a blocked drain in the pollen filter housing, boot or light cluster seals, and simply leaving wet things in the car. A sweet smell with a greasy film on the inside of the windscreen is different: that is a leaking heater matrix and needs a garage.
Is mould in a car actually dangerous?
It is worth taking seriously. A cabin is small, warm and sealed, and spores growing in the carpet or the air conditioning get circulated straight into the air you breathe whenever the fan runs. It commonly aggravates asthma and allergies and causes headaches on longer journeys, and it affects children more because they sit lower and closer to the rear vents.
Do odour bombs or foggers work?
They sanitise the air and the surfaces they can reach, which helps with a stale car. They do not reach into wet underlay, and that is where the growth causing the smell usually lives. If the smell returns a fortnight after a fogger, that is the reason.
Can you remove the smell without finding the leak?
We can improve it substantially, and it will come back. We would rather tell you that at the outset than take payment for a result that will not last. Where we can find and clear the source, such as a blocked sunroof drain, we will. Where it needs a garage, such as a heater matrix or a failed seal, we will tell you what to ask for.
How long does mould and damp removal take?
Typically half a day, and sometimes longer where carpets need lifting and drying properly. It is not a job that can be rushed, because the drying stage decides whether the result lasts. We would rather book the time than come back twice.
Why does my air conditioning smell but the carpets are dry?
That is a different problem with a different fix. Moisture condenses on the evaporator behind the dashboard and never fully dries, so bacteria and mould grow there and get blown into the cabin. It is treated with an antibacterial treatment through the system and a new cabin filter, not by cleaning the interior.
Will the carpets need replacing?
Rarely. Most damp and mould we see comes out with proper drying, steam and wet extraction. Replacement only becomes the honest answer where a car has stood wet for a long time and the underlay has broken down, or where contamination has soaked into the sound deadening. We will say so if we find it rather than charging you for a clean that cannot work.
