Why a bumper is a different job to a wing
A bumper is not a panel. It is a moulded plastic cover that flexes, sits at the part of the car most likely to meet a kerb or a bollard, and behaves differently from the metal around it at every stage of a repair.
- Plastic flexes, so the paint has to flex with it. A flexible additive goes into the primer and the paint. Standard panel paint sprayed onto a bumper will crack the first cold morning it is knocked.
- Adhesion is the first problem, not the last. Bare polypropylene rejects paint unless it is properly cleaned and given an adhesion promoter. Most failed bumper repairs failed here.
- Many bumpers have textured lower sections. These cannot be filled and flatted like a smooth surface. The texture has to be matched or the repair will stand out even in the right colour.
- There is often a great deal behind it. Parking sensors, radar units, cameras and washer jets all live in modern bumpers, and none of them appreciate heat or filler dust.
Why your bumper may never have matched exactly
This surprises most people. If you look closely at your car in daylight, particularly a metallic, the bumper is often a very slightly different shade from the wing beside it. That is not damage and it is not a previous repair. It is how the car left the factory.
- Metal panels are painted and then baked at a temperature that would deform plastic, so bumpers are painted separately, often in a different building.
- Metal bodies are painted electrostatically. Plastic cannot hold that charge, so a different application method is used.
- Metallic paint dries more slowly on plastic, which lets the metallic flake settle differently. The colour is the same; the way it reflects light is not.
- A bumper also has far more curves than a wing, so the same paint reads differently as the light moves across it.
This matters for a repair. We match to the bumper as it actually is, not to the paint code alone, and we blend outward into the surrounding area so the eye never finds an edge.
When a bumper can be repaired on the car
| Damage | Repaired in place? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kerb and car-park scuffing | Yes | The most common job. Prepped, filled where needed, refinished and blended on the car. |
| Light scratches through the lacquer | Yes | Flatted back and refinished locally. |
| Scuffing wrapped around a corner | Usually | Corners are awkward but workable. We will confirm from photos. |
| Cracks and splits | Sometimes | A clean split can be plastic-welded from behind, which often means removing the bumper. |
| Tabs and mounts broken off | No | If the bumper no longer sits correctly on its mounts, refinishing it will not fix the gap. That is a replacement. |
Send photographs straight on and from a low angle along the panel, which shows the depth of a scuff far better than a head-on shot.
Looking after a fresh bumper repair
- Leave it two weeks before washing the repaired area, and wash by hand when you do.
- No wax, sealant or ceramic for around a month. Fresh paint is still releasing solvent and needs to breathe.
- No automatic car washes and no pressure washing close to the repair edge.
- Park a little further from the kerb than you think you need to. Most bumpers we repair have been repaired before.
